The Refugee Mental Health Project, initiated
by Foundation House in partnership with the Victorian Transcultural
Psychiatry Unit, aims to address barriers encountered by
refugees in accessing mental health services, including long
waiting periods, shortage of clinicians with cross-cultural
expertise, limited use of interpreters, and fees.
The project has established Refugee Mental Health Clinics
at Foundation House premises in Brunswick and Dandenong
and a network of private mental health practitioners able
to provide specialist services to refugee clients. Psychiatrists
and a GP specialising in refugee mental health, work on
a sessional basis at Foundation House and work closely
with counsellor-advocates to coordinate case management
and ensure the needs of clients are met.
