On 19 May the Australian Government signed the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture, a treaty which obliges countries to permit periodic international inspections of its places of detention (e.g. prisons, immigration detention centres) and to establish domestic mechanisms to monitor the treatment of persons in places of detention.
