Survivors of torture endure extreme
deprivation, physical pain and psychological abuse. This
can have ongoing effects on their general health, sleep,
concentration, trust and sometimes, their capacity for intimacy.
Foundation House has developed innovative ways to address
the wide spectrum of health issues that survivors often face.
Foundation House’s Complementary Therapies program
of nutritional, herbal and tactile therapies combined with
psychological, social and medical services has created a
unique and holistic suite of support to aid recovery.
Foundation House’s programs of traditional medicine
and complementary therapies have been embraced by clients
from cultures in which traditional herbal remedies are widely
used and often preferred over other approaches.
Massage therapy has also proven to be extremely beneficial
for many clients. Given that many clients have experienced
terrible damage and pain by the hands of another person,
it’s remarkable that through massage therapy, the human
hand can contribute to the healing process.
With counsellor/advocates able to refer clients to in-house
complementary therapy services, Foundation House can assist
survivors on a number of levels. |
