The clients who use the services at
Foundation House come from diverse backgrounds, with more
than 30 countries of origin represented and over 15 language
groups. The vast majority of clients enter Australia as part
of the Government's Refugee and Humanitarian Program.
The
demographics of the Foundation House client base change over
time to reflect movements in the conflicts around the world.
While the number of clients from Bosnia-Herzegovina has decreased
in recent years, the number from Iraq has remained relatively
stable. The most dramatic increase has been the number of
Sudanese clients coming to Foundation House. There has also
been an increase in numbers of clients from other African
countries including Ethiopia, Burundi, Liberia and Sierra
Leone. Sadly, it is estimated that state sanctioned violence
is practised in over 150 countries, with up to one in three
refugees world wide having been subject to physical torture.
This exposure to physical or psychological violence is not
confined to adults. Many children and adolescent refugees
have witnessed horrific events and in some regimes have been
the specific targets of torture.
It was to address the unique
needs of people who have survived such terrible circumstance
that motivated the establishment of Foundation House, because
unfortunately, fear does not end nor does trauma miraculously
disappear with arrival in a safe country.
